CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Bucknell women's soccer team turned in a gutsy defensive effort against seventh-ranked Virginia, but the Cavaliers swiped a 1-0 verdict when Brianna Westrup headed in a corner kick with 29 seconds left in regulation at Klockner Stadium.
The Bison fell to 1-3 on the season, with all three losses coming by 1-0 margins against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Virginia, a Sweet Sixteen participant a year ago, improved to 4-0 with a 9-1 goal differential. This was the first time the Cavaliers have been held to a single goal this season.
Theresa Adu-Attobrah made a career-high 11 saves, one more than she had on Friday night at Monmouth. Her diving stop to her right on Montana Sutton kept it scoreless, and in the 79th minute she came well off her line for a sliding save on Meghan McCool.
In the final minute, Ayan Adu had space for a moment at the top of the 18, but a lunging defender just got a toe on the ball to deflect the shot wide. The Bison had successfully defended 11 corner kicks earlier in the match, but this time Virginia cashed in when Betsy Brandon's delivery was headed in from close range by Westrup.
The Cavaliers accounted for all 28 shots in the match, with 12 of them on frame. The Bison were trying to secure a point against a nationally ranked team for the first time.
Next up for the Bison is a home game against Towson on Friday at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field. The contest will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.
