LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Maura Fiamoncini was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, following a great showing in the javelin throw at the Penn Relays.
Fiamoncini, who also earned the Bison Athlete of the Week award on Monday, has broken both the Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium records in the javelin this season. The Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, native placed second in a field of 12 championship-level competitors with a toss of 176 feet, 11 inches. Fiamoncini continues to be one of the best throwers in both the Division I and Patriot League ranks. She has eclipsed the 170-foot threshold in three of her past four meets and her top throw of 184-5 feet, which was recorded at the Jim Taylor Invite last month ranks third in the nation.
Mackenzie Little of Stanford (192-4) and Alyssa Olin of North Dakota State (191-6) are the only athletes with better throws this year. Fiamoncini has also won two Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards this season; she won her first on Apr. 3, and her second on Apr. 17. This is the third Patriot League honor she has received this year.
The Bison will now gear up for the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, which are scheduled for May 4-5 at Lafayette. The final day of the meet will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.
