PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bucknell women's water polo team knocked off No. 19 Harvard, 9-8, to score its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2016 on Saturday morning at DeNunzio Pool.
Colleen Barron found the back of the net with 2:59 remaining in regulation to lift the Bison to their upset over the Crimson (15-14, 2-3 CWPA). Bucknell's stifling defense didn't allow a shot for the rest of the game, and Marta Considine sealed the win by coming up with a steal in the waning minutes.
After Harvard used a 4-2 third quarter to build a 7-6 advantage going into the final frame, the Bison scored three of the next four goals. Barron's game-winning strike came less than two minutes after Shyla Lintz finished off a hat trick to tie the game at eight apiece.
Considine also had a hat trick for Bucknell, which held a slim 4-3 lead at halftime on the strength of a 3-1 second stanza. During that quarter, she, Lintz and Kali Hyham found the back of the net.
Hyham (1g-2a), Ally Furano (1g-2a), Barron (1g-1a) and Emily Konishi (2a) also had multi-point outings for the Bison while Manuela Herrera made eight saves, including two in the fourth quarter.
Not only did Lintz record her second hat trick of the season, she also led Bucknell with four ejections drawn. Five different Bison recorded one steal.
Harvard was the last ranked opponent Bucknell toppled. In the CWPA fifth-place game on May 1, 2016, the then No. 20 Bison edged the then No. 18 Crimson, 11-7. Earlier that season at DeNuzio Pool, Bucknell downed then No. 15 Princeton, 10-9, on April 17 and then No. 18 Harvard, 7-6, on April 16.
Later in the afternoon, the Bison fell to Brown, 9-7. At halftime, the Bears held a 6-2 advantage, bolstered by a 3-0 opening frame. While Bucknell rallied to score five of the next eight goals, Brown managed to hold on to win.
Konishi led the Bison attack with four points on equal totals of goals and assists. Lintz had another strong game, filling the stat sheet with two goals, two ejections drawn and one steal.
Barron (1g-1a) and Sarah Mooney (1g-1a) also enjoyed multi-point outings while Herrera stopped five shots. Considine led Bucknell in both ejections drawn (3) and steals (2).
The Bison (12-16, 2-4 CWPA) conclude the regular season tomorrow at DeNunzio Pool with CWPA games against George Washington (9 a.m.) and No. 11 Princeton (3:30 p.m.).
