Bison Post Third Win this Season by at Least 30 points
LEWISBURG, Pa – The Bucknell women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with an 81-43 victory over Iona on Sunday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison head into final exams with a 7-2 record, its best nine-game mark to start a season since 2000-01.
Kaitlyn Slagus led the way for Bucknell with 20 points in just under 21 minutes of playing time. She shot 8-for-10 from the field to go along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocks. Ellie Mack recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Kate Walker scored 14 points.
Eleven different players scored for the Orange and Blue, which won its third game this year by at least 30 points.
Bucknell, which led by as many as 39 points in the fourth quarter, outscored Iona 38-16 on points in the paint and converted 21 Gaels' turnovers into 24 points. The Bison assisted on 20 of their 29 made field goals with seven different players recording at least two assists, led by Marly Walls with four.
"It was a balanced effort from our squad today," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We've struggled in recent years going into the weekend before finals. We have a lot of players with a lot going on school-wise, so for them to play as focused and hard as they have is great to see."
The Bison led for 39:28 and never trailed in the game. They have led for 74:29 out of a possible 80 minutes over their past two games, which they won by an average of 34.5 points.
The lead was already 44-22 at the half thanks to 15 points by Slagus, and Bucknell increased it with a 26-12 advantage in the third quarter. It was the seventh time this season and the sixth time in the last five games that the Bison scored 25 or more points in a quarter.
Mack recorded her double-double in just 23 minutes of playing time, shooting 5-for-8 from the field while adding three assists. She was one of four Bucknell players with three or more assists. Walker and English contributed three apiece, while Ally Johnson and Tessa Brugler each had two.
"We all know that no one on our team is going to average 18-20 points a game, even though if we were in a different position on different teams maybe we could, and we're ok with that," Mack said. "We're ok with sacrificing individual statistics for team wins."
Slagus led the team in scoring for the second time in three games, but in between that was a game in which she took just two shots and the team still won by 31 points. Seven different players have scored in double-digits at least once in the team's first nine games.
"Being 7-2 at this point is great, but what's most important for us right now is how well we are playing. To only be nine games in and see them gelling offensively the way that they have this early in the season is pretty incredible," Roussell said. "When you have a group that doesn't care who gets the credit that can be really dangerous for our opponents; especially with the weapons we have on this team."
Ally Johnson finished with nine points just one game after scoring a career-high 14 in a win over St. Bonaventure. Kyi English totaled seven points, while Abby Kapp was right behind her with six.
Bucknell made nine 3-pointers, led by two apiece from Kapp, Slagus, and Johnson. Kapp now has 27 3-pointers while shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc. Johnson has 14 treys on 50 percent shooting. Walker, Mack, and Rachel Dumiak all had one 3-pointer in the win.
The Bison continued to turn defense into offense, scoring 24 points off 21 turnovers. They tallied 10 steals – their fourth game with double-digit steals this season – including three by English.
Morgan Rachu scored a team-high 14 points for Iona (1-6). The Bison held the Gaels to 29 percent shooting.
Bucknell is off for nearly two weeks before it returns to Sojka Pavilion for a game against Rider on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m.
