The Bison Shot 23-of-25 from the Foul Line
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Abby Kapp hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points to lead Bucknell to an 80-59 win over Rider in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison, who were playing for the first time in 13 days, improved to 8-2 with their sixth-straight win. It's the program's best 10-game record in 32 years.
Rider took a 29-26 lead into the half, but Kapp caught fire from long range to give the Bison a 30-19 advantage in the third quarter and a 56-48 lead in the game. She connected for three 3-pointers and had 13 points in the quarter. It was the eighth time this season the Bison scored 25 or more points in a quarter and the seventh time in the last six games.
"That first half was a huge credit to Rider," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "They were able to be physical with us, pushed us off our spots, and really had us on our heels. They were aggressive and played well. It's not often that we get moved around like that."
Bucknell continued to pull away in the final quarter, just missing 25 points as it out-scored Rider 24-11. Eight players scored for the Bison in the quarter, led by Walls with seven on a 3-pointer and four free throws.
"We asserted ourselves much better in the third quarter. We told our players if they were going to be that aggressive then we needed to make sure to be strong with the ball and get to the free throw line," Roussell said.
The Bison did a large chunk of their damage at the foul line, making 23 of their 25 free throw attempts in the game. Walls was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line on her way to a career-high 12 points, while Kate Walker made all six of her attempts and finished with 13 points. Kaitlyn Slagus was 2-for-2 and joined them in double-figures with 11 points.
As has been the case all season for Bucknell, contributions came from the entire lineup. Ten players scored, 11 had at least one rebound, seven had at least one block, and seven had at least one steal. Kyi English contributed across the board with eight points, a career-high eight rebounds – all of her boards came in the first half – two assists, a block, and a steal. Ellie Mack did the same with seven points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Bucknell has had at least nine players score in a game nine times this season. Joining the balanced offensive effort against Rider were Ally Johnson with six points, Gia Hayes (3), Autumn Ceppi (2), and Rachel Dumiak (2).
"It's nice to have 13 players playing and 13 players contributing right now," Roussell said. "That can be a little challenging as a coach to find the right rotations, but it's a good problem to have."
The Bison finished with 11 steals, including three by Kapp, and had eight blocks. They held Stella Johnson to just nine points on 4-of-17 shooting. Johnson entered the game, averaging 20.6 points and had a triple-double with 35 points in a game earlier this season.
Bucknell is 3-0 at Sojka Pavilion this season and will have a challenging task to keep that unbeaten record intact when it hosts Youngstown State on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Penguins are 7-2 and have won each of their past three games.
The Bison will host over 900 local students for Education Day on Tuesday. The game is presented by W&L Subaru.
