• The Bison are currently 2-1 (0-0 EIWA) after dropping VMI (36-3) and Cleveland State (25-10) and falling to Buffalo (12-25) on Nov. 11. Bucknell's big winners were Zach Hartman (3-0 at 157 pounds), Drew Phipps (3-0 at 197 pounds) and Geo Barzona (2-0 at 125 pounds), who all emerged undefeated and also scored bonus points in at least one of their bouts.
• Hartman was impressive in his collegiate debut, pinning his first ever opponent in 6:42 and scoring his two other victories by decision. Most notably, he knocked off Buffalo's Alex Smythe, who entered the day ranked as high as No. 17 nationally, by a slim 8-7 decision. Hartman and Brett Rezendes were the lone freshmen to see the mat during the quad dual.
• In 2018-19, the Bison return one NCAA qualifier and three EIWA placewinners. Garrett Hoffman (184) earned an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Championships, where he bowed out after two bouts. David Campbell (133) and Phipps (184) each took eighth at the 2018 EIWA Championships while Joey Gould (133) was eighth at the 2017 rendition. All but Campbell have since changed weight classes.
• Bucknell's captains are Campbell, Hoffman, Phipps, Nick Stephani and Brandon Stokes. Â
• The Bison enjoyed one of their most successful stretches in program history from 2014 to 2017, compiling a combined record of 39-14 (23-5 EIWA) and placing third at the 2016 and 2015 EIWA Championships.
• In 2017-18, Bucknell battled injuries and used 22 different starters in dual competition, ultimately finishing with a 3-14 (2-7 EIWA) ledger. The performance of 141-pounder Tyler Smith, one of six seniors lost to graduation, was a bright spot; he became the program's fifth four-time NCAA qualifier and seventh EIWA runner-up. He also put together the 11th undefeated dual season in school history and became the 10th Bison to reach the 100-win plateau.
• Headlining Bucknell's 2018-19 schedule are its Sojka Pavilion duals against Penn State, winners of seven of the past eight NCAA Championships, and North Carolina. The duals, presented by Geisinger, Fairfield Auto Group and Giant, will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
• Head coach Dan Wirnsberger, who is in his 14th year at the helm, has a 115-116 record. He and Bob Ferraro, who led the Bison to a 169-175-6 record from 1974 to 1997, are the program's only head coaches to reach the 100-win plateau.
The 2017 Navy Classic
• The Bison finished 13th at the 2017 Navy Classic. A year earlier, they took fourth, which was their highest finish at the event since they placed third in 2011.
• Drew Phipps (3rd at 184 pounds), Tyler Smith (4th at 141 pounds) and D.J. Hollingshead (6th at 165 pounds) were Bucknell's placewinners.
• Phipps, a runner-up at the 2016 Navy Classic, went 4-1 en route to his third-place finish.
• After losing his first match of the day, Hollingshead rolled off four-straight victories in the consolation bracket to advance to the fifth-place match. He ultimately fell to Ohio's Austin Reese to take sixth.
• Smith, the defending Navy Classic champion at 141 pounds, went 3-2 on the day. His winning streak was ultimately snapped at six bouts in the semifinals by Ohio Dominion's Alex Madrigal.Â
A Look Ahead
• The Bison next host Penn State on Friday, Nov. 30 in Sojka Pavilion. The dual, which is presented by Geisinger, Fairfield Auto Group and Giant, is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on FloWrestling.
