ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Zach Hartman and Frankie Guida, Jr. took third place to lead the Bucknell wrestling team to a seventh-place finish at the Navy Classic on Saturday.
Matthew Kolonia and Drew Phipps added fourth-place finishes for the Bison, who had a final team score of 64.5. Michigan State took the team title with 126 points while Indiana was the runner-up with 95.5.
Hartman improved to 6-1 on the season with a 3-1 record at 157 pounds on Saturday. The freshman made quick work of his first two opponents, pinning both Matt Latanze (Brown) and Jake Danishek (Indiana) in the first period. Danishek was an NCAA qualifier as a sophomore in 2016.
The two falls put Hartman in the semifinal round, where he suffered his lone loss of the tournament to Larry Early (Old Dominion). Early, who is ranked ninth in the nation, went on to win the title. Hartman took third with an 8-4 win over Michigan State's Jake Tucker.
Guida posted a 2-1 record in the 174-pound bracket to up his season mark to 6-1. He opened with a 5-3 win over Michigan State's Drew Hughes, a national qualifier as a freshman in 2017, and then beat Navy's A.J. Alford, 12-8, in the quarterfinals. He fell to Edinboro's Jacob Oliver in the semifinals before advancing with two uncontested matches in the consolation bracket.
Guida was coming off a fifth-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open, where he posted a 4-1 record.
Kolonia's fourth-place showing with a 4-2 record at 141 pounds gives him a 6-3 record on the year. He posted three-straight wins, including two over returning national qualifiers, to advance to the semifinals. The first was a 17-2 technical fall over Indiana's Michael DeLaPena while the second was a 7-2 decision over Edinboro's Carmine Ciotti, a Division II national qualifier at Gannon last season. He followed that with a dominant 10-3 decision over Michigan State's Austin Eicher, a two-time national qualifier.
Navy's Nicholas Gil, ranked 15th in the nation, ended Kolonia's run in the winner's bracket, but the sophomore bounced back with a 7-5 win over Michigan State's Alex Hrisopoulous. He fell to Indiana's Paul Konrath in the consolation final.
Phipps placed at the Navy Classic for the third-straight year, adding a fourth-place showing to his runner-up performance as a freshman and his third-place finish as a sophomore in the 184-pound weight class. He went 4-2 in the 197-pound bracket to improve to 7-2 on the season. He opened with three-straight wins, beating Brown's David Heath (12-3), Campbell's Austin McNeill (8-2) and Michigan State's Brad Wilton (6-5).
