Kaelyn Long scores as Bucknell outshoots Bulldogs 23-1
LEWISBURG, Pa. – On a day when the field tilted toward the Yale goal throughout the contest, Kaelyn Long provided the lone goal in the 17th minute, and Bucknell defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 on a warm, sunny day at Graham Field.
The Bison bounced back nicely from a tough overtime loss to American 24 hours earlier and improved to 7-5 overall and 5-1 at home this season. Yale, which was coming off a 1-0 win over Cornell on Saturday, fell to 5-6.
Bucknell finished with an overwhelming 23-1 edge in shots and a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners. The Bison had most of the possession time, and when Yale did try to counter, Bucknell's deep midfield and sturdy back line were air tight. Center back Sally Olson and defensive partners Lexi Quick and Sam Chanzit made sure that Olivia Harris did not have to make a save.
Meanwhile, the Bison peppered Yale goalie Sydney Terroso, who finished with eight saves. Bucknell cashed in on its fourth penalty corner of the day. Terroso dove to her right to stop Quick's initial attempt and then got in front of a follow-up try by Mackenzie Haney, but Long slotted home the third chance to make it a 1-0 game.
Bucknell's best opportunity in the second half came with just over five minutes remaining. Quick received a penalty corner and centered it to Leah Fogelsanger, but her re-direct solidly struck the crossbar.
Bucknell's 23 shots came off the stick of 14 different players. Brittany Willwerth led all players with three attempts. Olivia Levieux was responsible for Yale's lone shot, which came just 2:21 into the match.
Next up for the Bison is a key Patriot League home game against 24th-ranked Boston University next Saturday at 11 a.m.
