Lohwater paces Bison with 72 in final round of fall season
FINAL RESULTS
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's golf team began final round of the Lehigh Invitational in 12th place, but the Bison vaulted all the way up to fourth thanks to a 298 team score on Saturday afternoon at Saucon Valley Country Club. Freshman Jason Lohwater paced the Bison with an even-par 72 as the team closed out a strong fall season.
Bucknell's 298 was the second-best mark in the 13-team field, trailing only the 294 posted by team champion Iona. No other team shot better than 303 on Saturday, as scoring conditions were difficult throughout the tournament.
Lohwater started his day with a birdie at the 10th hole, and he finished with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars to bounce back nicely from an opening-round 82. Connor O'Brien also shook off a tough opening day with a 2-over 74 that featured 14 pars and one birdie, also coming at the 10th hole to start the round.
Peter Bradbeer made four birdies -- two sets of back-to-backs at 14-15 and 6-7 -- to close with a 75. Coupled with a 78 on Friday, Bradbeer was the low Bison for the tournament with 153 composite, which put him in a tie for 18th place. Lohwater, O'Brien and Carter Cook (76-78) all shot 154 to finished T-23rd, while Chris Tanabe (78-77) was T-29th at 155.
Iona posted 605 (311-294) to charge up from seventh place to the team title, besting first-round leader Monmouth by two shots. Navy finished third at 609, followed on a crowded leaderboard by Bucknell (610), Siena (611), Lehigh (612), Colgate (613), Fairfield (616), Holy Cross (617), St. John's (618), Lafayette (621), Hofstra (625) and Fordham (639).
Lehigh's Owen Quinn was medalist with a 1-under 143 (68-75). Josh Madarang of Fordham, Cole Berger of Lafyaette, and Michael Tanaka of Lehigh were all four shots back at 147.
Bucknell continued its success at the Lehigh Invitational. The Bison won this tournament in 2015 and 2016 and placed second here last fall.
Bucknell finished in the top four in four of its six fall tournaments, including a win at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge in Vermont in September. O'Brien posted the team's low scoring average for the fall at 73.1, edging J.P. Raftery's 73.2 and Tanabe's 73.4.
Bucknell will resume tournament play on Feb. 25-26 at the Wexford Plantation Invitational at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
