LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team opened the 2016 season Friday with a tough matchup against Delaware. Despite a tightly contested game, the Blue Hens scored three late second half goals to defeat the Bison in the season opener at Emmitt Field.
It was a scoreless game into the 74th minute, when Delaware capitalized on a mistake in the back. Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano had his kick blocked by Guillermo Delgado, who took ball from the goalie and found Dani Laguna for the finish.
Three minutes later, Delaware scored its second goal of the night, this time by Delgado. John Schroeder crossed the ball into the box from the right side of the field, which was collected by Delgado and headed into the net. Delgado scored once more in the 87th minute, thanks to a long through ball from Laguna off a header from Marco Siverio.
Delaware (1-0), who was picked second in the CAA Preseason Poll and coming off its third consecutive CAA Tournament title game appearance, outshot the Bison 16-11 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
It was the collegiate debut for Marchiano, who put up a tough fight in his first game in a Bison uniform. The freshman finished with four saves in the contest, including a fantastic save in the 27th minute to record his first career stop. Marchiano made another impressive save in the 48th minute off a shot from Delgado.
Bucknell (0-1) had several close calls in the contest, particularly in the 39th minute. After some great defensive work from freshmen Nick King and Bernie Wright, King just missed the far post from a sharp angle on the left side.
Head coach Brendan Nash went deep into his bench Friday, getting a look at freshmen Quinn Bredin, Daniel Hallowell, Ari Rosenzweig and Patrick Mahoney against collegiate competition.
The Bison return to action Sunday with a contest at St. Bonaventure. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
