BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Freshman Nick King recorded his first collegiate goal, and rookie goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano made four saves, including a crucial stop in the first overtime period, helping the Bison to a 1-1 tie Sunday at St. Bonaventure at Marra Sports Complex.
After nearly scoring in Friday's season opener, King, who scored 76 goals in his high school career, recorded Bucknell's first goal of the season in the 31st minute. Dan Bank recovered the ball from the Bonnies, dribbling the ball out 30 yards before finding the freshman, who sent the ball to the far post.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, Bucknell (0-1-1) spent much of the afternoon defending. St. Bonaventure (0-1-1), who was playing in its 2016 home opener, kept the pressure on and racked up 14 shots in the contest.
Marchiano made four tough saves in the game, but none more impressive than his stop at the end of the first overtime period, where he had to punch the ball over the crossbar off a shot from Kieran Toland.
Bucknell nearly pulled out the 1-0 win, but a handball in the box with under a minute to play in regulation led to a penalty kick from Toland.
With a quick turnaround from Friday's season opener, head coach Brendan Nash went deep into the roster, playing nine reserves.
“We were very close with getting out of there with a 1-0 victory on the road after a short turnaround,” said Nash. “We didn't balance the rest the way we needed to and found trouble.”
The Bison return to action Sept. 2 with a trip to Vermont to compete in the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic. Bucknell will take on LIU Brooklyn at 4:30 p.m.
