HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Bucknell women's lacrosse team fought for 60 minutes but just could not overcome a 4-0 deficit to start the game and fell 10-9 to Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small '76 Field. Emily Becker scored four goals to lead the Bison, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end while slipping to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League.
Four different times Bucknell closed the gap to one goal, but Colgate (5-8, 3-3 PL) never relinquished the lead. Becker scored with 3:59 and 1:15 remaining to reduce a 10-7 lead to 10-9. Ally Furbay collected the draw control, giving the Bison a possession to tie it up, but Maddy Molinari saw her shot from the slot sail just wide of the post with four seconds left, and Bucknell could not get off a clean shot on the restart.
Becker also recorded an assist, giving her a five-point ledger. Gretchen Richter, Bucknell's season leader in goals and draw controls, tallied two goals and five DCs but had to sit out the final six minutes after picking up a second yellow card. Eve Lukowski and Christina Manis both had one goal and one assist, and Sam Rickels also scored for the Bison.
Jamie DeWitt had a strong game in goal for Bucknell with 11 saves, including a big one on Lauren Gorajek with 1:31 remaining that paved the way for Becker's tally that made it a one-goal game again.
Asil Asfour made six saves for Colgate, none bigger that her two point-blank stops around the 15-minute mark of the second half when it was an 8-7 game. The second of those stops led to a Kristen Brigagliano goal with 13:06 to go. Holly Korn then scored another big insurance tally, which proved to be the game-winning goal, with 8:27 to go.
Isabel Kreitler led the Raiders with three goals, while Haley O'Hanlon had a goal and four assists. Emily Peebles scored twice and O'Hanlon dished out three assists in Colgate's 4-0 run over the first eight minutes of play.
Bucknell got right back in it with three goals in just 1:40. Richer and Manis scored eight seconds apart, the latter coming on a nice 2-on-1 draw break with Molinari. Rickels' shot from distance made it a 4-3 game.
O'Hanlon put the Raiders back up by three at 7-4, but Becker scored on a beautiful one-timer off a Manis feed with 17 seconds remaining to make it 7-5 at the half.
After Kreitler opened the second-half scoring, back-to-back goals by Richter and Becker pulled the Bison within 8-7, but they never could get the game tied.
Turnovers and ground balls were a factor in the game, as the Bison were hampered by 10 miscues, while Colgate turned the ball over only five times. Colgate also won the ground ball battle 16-7. The Raiders outshot Bucknell 30-23, while the Bison led 11-10 in draw controls.
Bucknell is back in action at home twice next week. The Bison host league-leading Loyola on Wednesday at 5 p.m., followed by Navy next Saturday on Senior Day at 1 p.m.
Loyola improved to 6-0 in the Patriot League with an overtime win over Lehigh on Saturday. Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy are all tied for second at 4-2, followed by Boston University at 4-3 and Colgate at 3-3.
