Women's Water Polo Falls to Two Ranked Teams on Final Day of Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bucknell women's water polo team concluded play at the Wolverine Invitational Sunday against a pair of ranked opponents and came away with a pair of losses. The Bison fell to No. 15 Loyola Marymount by a 14-10 score early in the day and then lost 20-5 to No. 2 UCLA in the evening. The Bison are now 8-8 on the season and they have faced eight ranked opponents, including three in a row.
Hannah Sunday and Eleanor Marrs tallied three goals apiece in the opener against the Lions (6-12) and Bucknell trailed by just one goal at halftime. However, Loyola Marymount outscored the Bison 5-2 in the third quarter and led by as many as six goals in the second half.
Emily Konishi and Colleen Barron chipped in two goals apiece for Bucknell. Konishi also had a season-high three assists in the contest.
Haley Derrod played in goal against Loyola Marymount, totaling five saves. The Lions offense was led by five goals from Hana Vilanova.
In the nightcap, UCLA outscored the Bison 8-2 in the first half and cruised to the victory. Bucknell attempted just 20 shots in the game and five different players scored one goal apiece.
UCLA (15-2) had eight different players score at least two goals.
Bucknell had never before played a team ranked as high as No. 2 in the national rankings.
Thanks to their offensive production on Sunday, Marrs and Sunday moved up Bucknell's all-time lists. Marrs moved into 12th place in career points with 232, while Sunday moved up to ninth place in goals with 158.
The Bison will open their spring break trip to California next weekend with three games at the Aztec Invitational. Bucknell will play six total games in California.
