Women's Water Polo Splits on First Day of Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Bucknell women's water polo team opened its six-game spring break trip to California with both a win and a loss on Saturday. The Bison opened play at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational with a 9-3 loss to No. 11 UC San Diego and then followed that with an 11-5 victory over Chapman.
Eleanor Marrs and Hannah Sunday equaled their season highs with four goals apiece in the win over the Panthers. Marrs, who now has three four-goal outings this season, also dished out two assists as the Bison scored multiple goals in all four quarters.
The Bucknell (9-9) defense held Chapman (3-9) without a goal in the middle two periods. The Bison led by as many as seven goals (10-3) after the score was tied 3-3 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Manuela Herrera recorded six saves in goal in the win. Haley Derrod also had six saves in the day's first game.
Emily Konishi, Sunday and Marta Considine each scored one goal in the loss to nationally ranked UC San Diego (15-6), but the Tritons led 5-1 at halftime on their way to the victory.
UC San Diego marked the ninth nationally ranked opponent for Bucknell this season. The win over Chapman helped the Bison improve to 9-0 against unranked foes.
Bucknell will wrap up play at the Aztec Invitational Sunday with a 5 p.m. (Eastern) game vs. host San Diego State, which is ranked 20th in the country.
