LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track and field team looks to match or improve upon an impressive performance at last year's Colonial Relays when the team travels to Williamsburg, Virginia for this weekend's edition. The event, hosted by William and Mary, will be held on Friday and Saturday. In addition, a small group of student-athletes will compete at the Bloomsburg Tri-Meet on Saturday.
The Bison tied for second place out of 49 teams at last year's meet, scoring 70 points. Bucknell tied with UNCW, while Villanova took the team title with 148 points.
“This meet is always a team favorite,” says head coach Kevin Donner. “It's a team oriented meet that also includes a ton of non-traditional relays and we are able to bring out a lot of people. Being five weeks out from leagues this year compared to four in previous years, we don't feel pressured to chase times and distances just yet, so we can focus on being competitive. I would be very pleased to match last year's team that placed second.”
Efe Agege led the individual performances for Bucknell, posting a third place finish in triple jump. The Bison also added two third-places finishes in the relay events.
The Bison women opened the outdoor season last weekend at the Jim Taylor Invitational, winning eight events while qualifying six for the ECAC Outdoor Championships.
Jess Bridle ran the third-fastest time in program history en route to her 200-meter title, crossing the line with an ECAC-qualifying time of 24.70 to earn Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week honors. Sophia Nnadi earned first place finishes in discus and hammer throws, while qualifying for the ECACs in the hammer.
Other individual winners included Jenn Silvestri (400), Kathleen Fitzgerald, (800) and Margaret Thomson (3000 steeplechase). It was a solid day for the Bison relay squads, as they earned first place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay events.
Following the Colonial Relays, the team will return to action Apr. 9 to compete at the Mason Spring Invitational, hosted by George Mason.
