SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday at Susquehanna's Jim Taylor Invitational at Nicholas A. Lompardo Stadium. The Bison won eight events at the meet, while six individuals qualified for the ECAC Outdoor Championships.
Sophia Nnadi took first out of 34 in the hammer, recording an ECAC-qualifying toss of 161-0. Nnadi finished up her day with a first place finish in the discus and a runner up finish in the shot put.
Jess Bridle picked up where she left off after an impressive indoor season, winning the 200-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 24.70. Her time is also the third-fastest performance in school history.
Jen Silvestri won the 400 hurdles title, beating out 22 runners with an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:01.81. Chrissy Haney was the runner up in the event with a time of 1:02.35, which also meets the ECAC standard.
Kathleen Fitzgerald took first out of 35 runners in the 800, finishing the run in 2:18.04. Her time is a new personal best.
Bucknell took the top three spots in the 3000 steeplechase. Margaret Thomson came in first with a time 11:36.84, followed by Christine O'Kane and Lauren Hazzard finishing second and third, respectively.
It was a solid day for the Bison relay teams, as the two squads earned first-place finishes for both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the 4x100 relay, the quarter of Kafilat Oladiran, Carly Reiner, Kimberley Lapszynski and Jess Bridle finished with a time of 48.14. In the 4x400 relay, a team of Natalie Waterhouse, Rachel Paciello, Jamie Kenney and Elyse Pettaway crossed the line in 4:00.90.
Meg Sangimino took third in the javelin with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 145-11. Her toss is also the fourth-best effort in school history. Dayna Simone finished fourth, but her throw of 137-2 meets the ECAC standard.
"I was really happy with our first meet," says head coach Kevin Donner. "Traditionally, when we come back from spring break, we really load up the training and train through the first meet and I do not worry about times or distances, yet this year the times and distances were still pretty solid which bodes well for the next few weeks."
