LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore attackman Will Sands had a monster seven-goal game in Bucknell's come-from-behind win at Holy Cross on Saturday, and he was rewarded for his efforts by picking up a pair of honors on Monday afternoon. Sands was named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, and he was also selected as the Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week.
In a must-win Patriot League contest in Worcester, Massachusetts, Bucknell trailed 7-2 in the first half and 9-5 in the third quarter, but Sands then had four goals and an assist in a 13-2 second-half run that completely changed the game.
Sands scored a man-up goal with 2:56 left in the third quarter that brought the Bison within 10-9, then he made a terrific individual move to beat two defenders and the goalie with eight seconds left in the period to put them up 11-10.
Sands scored two insurance goals late in the fourth quarter to help Bucknell improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 in Patriot League play.
The seven goals were one shy of the Bucknell school record for goals in a game. Three players have scored eight times in one game, one of which is 2011 graduate Ryan Klipstein, who is currently an assistant coach at Holy Cross.
Klipstein scored eight times against Lafayette in 2012. Bucknell's other eight-goal games came from Jim Ball against Penn State in 1979 and Todd Heritage against Hobart in 2012.
Sands is Bucknell's leader in goals (16) and points (24) through six games. He now ranks third in the Patriot League in points per game and fifth in goals per game.
Bucknell has two home games against ranked teams coming up this week. The Bison host No. 6/7 Villanova on Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by No. 16 Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
