Women's Water Polo Downs St. Francis Brooklyn, Falls to No. 16 Wagner

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bucknell women's water polo team recorded its first win of the young 2016 season on Sunday at the Bruno Classic when it defeated St. Francis Brooklyn by a wide 18-5 margin. The Bison were back in the pool just a couple hours later and lost to No. 16 Wagner by an 11-9 score.
Bucknell finished its season-opening weekend with a 1-3 mark, but all three losses were to nationally ranked opponents and came by a combined seven goals.
In the opener against St. Francis Brooklyn (0-2), the Bison netted their most goals in a game since 2011 as 11 different Bucknell players scored at least one goal. Centers Hannah Sunday and Shyla Lintz led the Bison with three goals apiece. Bucknell led 12-3 at the half and limited the Terriers to just two second-half goals.
Haley Derrod got the start in goal against St. Francis Brooklyn and registered five saves.
In the nightcap, the Bison had a 7-6 lead on the Seahawks (4-6) at halftime, but were outscored 5-2 in the second half. Eleanor Marrs scored a team-high three goals, while Sunday and Colleen Barron added two apiece.
Manuela Herrera earned her second start of the year in goal and posted seven saves, the most by a Bison goalie this weekend.
Bucknell will be back on the road next weekend when it plays four games at the Princeton Invitational.
