Women's Water Polo Drops Pair of Games to Ranked Opponents on Opening Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bucknell head coach John McBride lined up a difficult opening weekend of the season for the Bison women's water polo team as the squad is schedule to face three teams ranked in the top 20 nationally. Bucknell took on two of those squads on Saturday on the first day of Brown's Bruno Open and lost to No. 20 Marist by a 10-8 score and fell to No. 4 Hawaii by a 14-11 margin.
Bucknell (0-2), which is receiving votes in the national poll, was playing its first games of the 2016 campaign. Marist (2-4) is into its second weekend of competition, while Hawaii is already 9-1 on the young season.
Senior captain Hannah Sunday had the best day in terms of goals scored with a team-high five in the two games. Fellow captain Eleanor Marrs totaled four goals and two assists on the day, while Tegan Stanbach scored four goals and one assist.
The Bison starting lineup of Sunday, Marrs, Stanbach, Kendyl Johnson, Colleen Barron and Emily Konishi combined to score 18 of the team's 19 goals on the day.
In the opener, Marist outscored Bucknell 6-2 in the middle two periods to take an 8-4 lead entering the final period. The Bison outscored the Red Foxes 4-2 in the final quarter, including tallying the final three goals of the game, but could draw no closer than two. Sunday led the way with three goals.
In the nightcap, Bucknell outscored Hawaii 6-3 in the final period to cut into a six-goal deficit at the end of the third quarter. Marrs and Stanbach each scored a team-high three times in the contest.
Sophomore Manuela Herrera (vs. Marist) and junior Haley Derrod (vs. Hawaii) each earned a start in goal for the Bison.
Bucknell will wrap up play at the Bruno Classic Sunday with games against St. Francis Brooklyn at 9:10 a.m. and No. 16 Wagner at 12:40 p.m.
