BOARDMAN, Ohio – Playing in a one-point match for the second straight day, the Bucknell men's tennis team secured the doubles point this time on its way to a 4-3 win on the road over Youngstown State. The Bison improved to 4-3 overall, while the Penguins dropped to 3-6.
The reigning Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year helped the Bison clinch the first point with a big win at No. 1. Senior Nick Bybel and Bryan Adams improved to 1-2 in the spring, defeating Hugo Morth and Agustin Reyes 6-1.
Sophomores Daniel Wright and Max Kane teamed up for the other doubles win, beating Matthew Kritzinger and Luker Purser 6-4 at No. 2. That upped their record to 2-1.
“It was great to bounce back today and get the win after a tough loss yesterday,” said Bucknell head coach Craig Schwartz. “It was nice to see Nick and Bryan get back to their winning way at first doubles. Winning the doubles point gave us the momentum we needed to secure three points in singles. We are really looking forward to playing some tough competition next weekend.
Bybel was also a winner at No. 1 singles, where he knocked off Morth, a returning All-Horizon League Player. Both sets were close, with Bybel winning 7-6 (6), 7-5.
Bucknell's other winners in singles had tough matches, as well. At No. 3, Wright won the first set 6-3 and then hung over for a close 7-6 (5) decision in the second set. With the Bison playing without Adams in singles, freshman Andrei Vitiuc bumped up one spot to No. 4, where he topped Gabriel Tolesani 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Vitiuc improved to 5-1 during the spring.
The Bison will have three matches on the road next weekend. They will play at Old Dominion on Friday, at Norfolk State on Saturday and at William & Mary on Sunday.
