LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Andrei Vitiuc was named the Corvias Patriot League Tennis Male Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday. The rookie wins the award for the first time in his career and earns Bucknell's first honor this season.
Vitiuc gutted out a three-set victory over No. 47 Penn State's Marc Collado at No. 5 singles, earning the lone point for the Bison on Saturday. The freshman grabbed his fourth-straight win of the spring, coming back from a first-set loss and winning two consecutive tiebreaks 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0(10-3).
Before his singles flight, Vitiuc played at No. 3 doubles with fellow freshman Max Haase. The duo held the Nittany Lions from completing the doubles sweep with a win over Nika Dolidze and Zach Lieb, 6-3.
Vitiuc and the Bison will play a pair of tough opponents on the road this weekend. They will travel to take on Saint Francis on Saturday, and will go on the road to play at Youngstown State on Sunday.
Bucknell is 3-2 on the season with shutout wins over Le Moyne, La Salle and Niagara.
