LEWISBURG, Pa. – Christian Moyse found the back of the net in the second half to give Lafayette a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League men's soccer contest Wednesday night at Emmitt Field. Bucknell moves to 3-7-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards improve to 6-5-0 and 2-1-1 in the conference.
Moyse looped in a header from eight yards out with just 3:09 remaining in the contest. Diego Gomera-Tavarez served a ball into the box, headed by Evan Vare, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, and then finished with a leaping header by Moyse, with the ball arching over the outstretched arms of keeper Emmett Witmer.
It was an evenly contested match, as the Bison held a 10-9 advantage in shots, while Lafayette led 9-7 in corners.
Bucknell's best look of the evening came in the eighth minute off a shot from Austin Lenart that went wide of the right post.
The Bison defense was solid for most of the evening, holding Lafayette without a shot attempt in the second half until the 83rd minute.
Neither team was able to generate many scoring chances in the game, as both goalkeepers, Witmer and Brad Seeber, the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, finished with one save apiece.
“The first half, we played the way we wanted to play,” said head coach Brendan Nash. “Second half, we got away from our game plan and in the last 10 minutes I thought we did a tough job of managing the game. It's the little plays in Patriot League games that make the difference. We knew how Lafayette was going to try and score, and that's how they ended up doing it. We did a good job defending 95% of the time, but the difference is that five-percent when we didn't and that's why Lafayette won 1-0.”
Bucknell returns to action Saturday (Oct. 8) with a contest at Colgate. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the match will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
