LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Junior Chris Devlin had a hand in four first-place finishes, but the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team fell to Boston University 175-121 in the first scored meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
On a day when the Bucknell program celebrated the 60th anniversary of its very first varsity team, the current Bison squad won six events and had some strong performances against the Terriers.
Devlin captured both backstroke events and the 200-yard individual medley, and he also swam the lead leg on the winning 200 medley relay. On the meet-opening relay, Devlin teamed with Chadd Cummings, James Elmendorf and Charlie McFarland for a time of 1:33.87 and a narrow win over the Terriers.
Later in the meet, Devlin easily won the 100 back in 50.96 and the 200 back in 1:49.45, and he captured the 200 IM in 1:54.68. Devlin is the reigning Patriot League Championships Swimmer of the Meet and the 2015 PL Rookie of the Meet, and this past summer he competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha.
Distance specialist Louis Behnen also had a good day with a pair of victories in the 500 free (4:34.11) and 1000 free (9:34.12). He won the 500 by nearly 10 seconds and the 1000 by more than 15 seconds.
Cummings and Jack Robinson both turned in a pair of second-place finishes. Cummings was runner-up in the 100 (57.26) and 200 (2:06.07) breaststrokes, while Robinson took second in the 100 (47.70) and 200 (1:44.22) freestyles.
The Bison also added a second-place finish from Mitch Buccalo in the 200 butterfly (1:57.68).
Bucknell returns to action on Oct. 30 at Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
