LEWISBURG, Pa. – In a battle of the Bison, Bucknell exploded for seven goals to defeat Howard 7-0 Tuesday night at Emmitt Field. Four different players had multi-point outings, as Bucknell improved to 4-8-2 overall in its mid-week break from Patriot League play.
Coming off a three-goal second half at Colgate Saturday, Bucknell continued its offensive outburst with three goals in the opening period, followed by four more goals in the second half, tying the facility record set in 2012 in a 7-0 win over Adelphi. The Bucknell men's soccer program dates back to 1929, and only nine times previously have the Bison scored more than seven goals in a game.
Bucknell got on the board in the fifth minute off a score from Justin Galiani. Nick King serviced a ball into the penalty area, which was headed by Austin Lenart to Galiani for the finish.
Bucknell scored its second goal of the contest in the 15th minute. Galiani played a cross from Sebastiaan Blickman, finding King for the easy finish.
Ben Derleth found the back of the net right before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Derleth stole the ball from a Howard defender, sending a right-footed blast between the pipes for his second goal of the year.
Bucknell's four goals in the second half came within a span of three minutes and five seconds.
In the 53rd minute, Blickman was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick and a 4-0 Bucknell advantage. The Bison tacked on another goal 1:18 later, as Lenart knocked in a diving header to the back post off a service from Dan Bank on the right wing.
Just 21 seconds later, King sent a through ball to Blickman for his seventh goal of the season and his fifth in the last two games. In the 56th minute, King tallied his third assist of the night, finding Ari Rosenzweig on the right side for his first collegiate goal.
Lost in the offensive surge was a shutout for the defense, which limited Howard to three total shots, holding the Bison without an attempt until the 62nd minute. Emmett Witmer finished with two saves in the victory.
“We took some fuel from our second half at Colgate into tonight,” said head coach Brendan Nash. “Things that we were successful with on Saturday we tried to duplicate and from looking at the scoreboard, we were successful with it today.”
Bucknell resumes Patriot League action Saturday at Navy. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
