ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Louis Behnen was an individual winner, and JT Nangle posted four top-five finishes to lead the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team at the Navy Invite on Saturday at Lejeune Hall. The meet was unscored, and the Bison took the opportunity to have many of their swimmers compete in secondary events.
Behnen's first-place finish came in the 200 free, where he topped 26 other swimmers with a time of 1:41.79. The event was dominated by the Bison, who took the top five spots. Behnen was followed by Chris Devlin, Jack Robinson, Denver Freeman and Sam Rutan.
Behnen also led an impressive effort by the Bison in the 200 IM. He finished second out of 29 swimmers with a time of 1:55.48, touching the wall just after Seton Hall's Ivan Michalovic's winning time of 1:55.08. Finishing third and fourth in the event were Mitch Buccalo and Wes Marberry.
Nangle joined Marberry, Brian Phillips and Steve Grune on the third-place 200 free relay team and combined with Robinson, Chadd Cummings and Vincent Filippini to take third in the 200 medley relay. Individually, he was third in the 50 free and added a fourth-place finish in the 100 back.
Bucknell had runner-up finishes in two other events, including Cummings in the 100 breast. He was second out of 24 swimmers and was followed by Devlin in third and Robinson in fifth. Freeman was second out of 14 in the 200 fly.
Senior Tyler Wenzel has been making sure to close his career with the Bison on a strong note. For the second straight meet, he posted the second best score in program history on the 3-meter board, taking third with a score of 303.95. That improves on his personal best of 303.70 against Columbia on Senior Day. Wenzel added a third-place showing on the 1-meter board.
Rounding out Bucknell's third-place finishers were Tarik Lott in the 100 fly and Will Rappaport in the 200 back.
Bucknell now turns its attention to the Patriot League Championships, which will also be held at Navy. The conference meet is scheduled for Feb. 17-20.
