ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team had a strong performance on the opening night of the Patriot League Championships Wednesday night at Navy. The Bison set a school record in the 800 free relay, as Bucknell sits in third place in the team standings following day one's three scheduled events.
Bucknell's team of Louis Behnen, Jack Robinson, Denver Freeman and Chris Devlin shaved more than three seconds off the previous 800 free relay standard, touching the wall in 6:32.82. The Bison finished as the runner-up in the event. Behnen's 200 free leadoff leg of 1:37.85 is also a new school record, topping the previous mark of 1:37.99 set by Devlin in last season's ECAC Championships.
The 200 medley relay of Devlin, Sam Mackie, Triston Loux and Steven Grune placed fifth in its race, but its time of 1:30.25 ranks second in school annals to a quartet from last year's Patriot League Championships that also included Grune.
Tyler Wenzel placed fifth in the three-meter diving event while Patrick Alvermann finished 12th to help the team earn 19 points in the standings.
The Patriot League Championships will continue Thursday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free are the individual swimming events that will be contested, while women's one-meter diving will also take place.
