LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nick Bybel was already Bucknell's record holder for career singles wins. Now, with his titles in both singles and doubles at the Bison Invite on Saturday, he has added the record for total career wins. He led an impressive effort that saw the Bison take first in all four singles draws and both doubles draws.
Bybel defeated teammate Daniel Wright in Flight 1 to earn his first singles title of the fall and teamed with Bryan Adams to beat fellow Bison Wright and Ben Gerber in the finals of the Flight 1 doubles bracket. The senior went 5-0 over the two-day event, raising his career record to 156-52. Josh Katten was the previous record holder for career victories, amassing a mark of 155-96 during his four-year career (2009-13).
All four singles draws had all-Bucknell finals and three of the four saw teammates push each other to exciting three-set matches. In Flight 2, Max Kane clinched the title with a 14-12 win in set three over Bryan Adams. In Flight 3, Timber Erskine clinched the championship with a 10-8 victory in the final set over Ben Gerber. And in Flight 4, newcomer Max Haase outlasted Andrei Vitiuc with a 10-8 verdict in the final set.
Kane and Erskine were both two-time champions on the day. They teamed for an 8-3 win over Vitiuc and Haase in the finals of the Flight 2 doubles draw.
Bucknell didn't lose a single match to a non-Bison player during the tournament. The Bison went 21-0 against opponents from Lafayette, Niagara and Saint Francis.
The Bison Invite is the final home event of the fall. A few Bison players will compete at the ITA Championships starting on Oct. 3 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while the rest will be back in action on Oct. 9 at Princeton's Farnsworth Invite.
