LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kendall Ham and twin sister Jackie Ham each registered a goal to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Holy Cross on family weekend at Emmitt Field. Alexis Gannon also picked up an assist on Kendall's goal, helping the Bison improve to 5-5-1 overall and earn their first Patriot League victory of the season.
Bucknell scored one goal in the first half and one in the second half to snap a three-game losing streak and remain unbeaten at Holmes Stadium.
“Today's game was really exciting and we came out with a lot of energy which we knew we had to against a tough Holy Cross team,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “It's great to take pride in your home field and be able to defend it and I think we did that today.”
After 29 minutes of back and forth play, Kendall put the Bison on the board in the 30th minute. Lauren Dandie found an open Gannon, who was able to drive the ball to the right end line. Gannon crossed to Ham, who was able to slot the ball to the bottom right post for her sixth goal of the season.
Not to be outdone by her sister, Jackie added to the Bucknell lead in the 67th minute. Jackie drove the ball up the right wing, cutting it back inside and making a move on her defender to create enough space for the left-footed blast.
The Bison back line put together a rock solid performance, posting their fifth shutout of the season and continuing their streak of not allowing a goal at home. Bucknell's five shutouts are tied for third-most in a single season and the most since 2006.
Holy Cross' best opportunity of the afternoon came in the 58th minute. Following a Bucknell foul, Jenna Scanlon took a free kick from the top of the box, but had the shot blocked away by a Bison defender.
Bucknell outshot the Crusaders 12-11, but tied 3-3 in corner kick opportunities. Kendall paced the team with three shot attempts, while Jessica Ratner made three saves.
The Bison return to action Wednesday evening for a league matchup at Lafayette. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
