LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team was flawless on the first day of the Bison Invite on Friday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts. The Bison went a perfect 16-0 in singles and doubles while competing against players and teams from Lafayette, Niagara and Saint Francis. Play concludes on Saturday.
Bucknell is guaranteed titles in both Flight 1 and Flight 2 doubles. Nick Bybel and Bryan Adams will take on Daniel Wright and Ben Gerber in the finals of the top flight, while Andrei Vitiuc and Max Haase will play Max Kane and Timber Erskine in the finals of the second flight. The four teams combined to go 7-0 on Friday.
Of Bucknell's eight singles wins on the day, just one went three sets. Erskine outlasted Robin Van der Heijden from Saint Francis 6-7, 7-6, 10-5 to advance to the Flight 3 semifinals, where he will play teammate Max McDonald. Gerber advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eli Cerdan from Saint Francis on the other side of the bracket.
Bybel and Wright both won quarterfinals matches in Flight 1. Kane and Adams advanced to the semifinals in Flight 2, and Vitiuc and Haase won their matches in Flight 4. The Flight 4 bracket had only four players so Vitiuc and Haase will play each other for the title when play resumes tomorrow. Vitiuc was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Lafayette's Ethan Binder, while Haase beat Lafayette's Matthew DeBenedetto 6-3, 7-5.
