PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Duquesne used a pair of first half goals to defeat the Bucknell women's soccer team 2-0 in the non-conference finale for both teams on Tuesday night at Rooney Field. Katie O'Connor and Linnea Faccenda finished with a goal and an assist apiece for the Dukes to move the Bison to 4-5-1 overall on the year.
Duquesne took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. O'Connor got on a loose ball in the box and created enough space to take a shot, just squeezing the ball past the goalkeeper to the near left post. Faccenda was credited with the assist.
The Dukes extended their lead in the 40th minute on a score from Faccenda, off a double assist from Amy Vinopal and O'Connor. Following a back heal pass to the left side from Vinopal off a pass from O'Connor, Faccenda was able to fire a shot to the far right post for the 2-0 lead.
The Bison had a near goal in the 20th minute on a free kick from Cora Climo. Climo was able to get a line to the left side, making Kyra Murphy go full extension in order to make the stop.
Bucknell's defense played solid in the opening minutes of the first half, posting back-to-back blocked shots from Abby Losco in the ninth minute. The back line came up big again in the 37th minute following a cross from Vinopal that created a scramble in the box that was cleared out.
Jessica Ratner finished with three saves in the game, but was very active on the afternoon, keeping the sheet clean in the second half.
“Tonight's game was very disappointing,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “Despite playing a better second half, we were unable to find quality in the attacking third. We need to learn from the game and start preparing for our first home conference game on Saturday.”
The Bison held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, while Duquesne had a 13-12 edge in shot attempts.
Madison Loos paced the Bison with four shot attempts while Climo and Kendall Ham finished with two shots each. Murphy recorded four stops in goal for the Dukes.
Bucknell resumes Patriot League action on Saturday when they host Holy Cross at Emmitt Field. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
