BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell women's soccer team opened up Patriot League play on Sunday with a tough matchup at two-time defending champion Boston University. The Terriers used two first half goals from Erica Kosienski and two more goals in the second half to defeat the Bison 4-0 at Nickerson Field. The Bison move to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Patriot League preseason favorite controlled possession for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Bison 14-3. The Terriers also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Boston University got on the board in the 28th minute. Jesse Shreck crossed the ball from the right side into the box, where Dorrie Varley-Barrett was able to head the ball down to Kosienski for the tip-in score.
Kosienski scored her second goal of the afternoon just three minutes later. Following a shot attempt that was cleared away, Kosienski was able to grab the loose ball and find the back of the net for the unassisted goal.
The Bison had a near-goal in the 30th minute off a header from Madison Loos but had the shot saved by Alyssa Parisi.
Chelsea Churchill gave the Terriers a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute, following a blast from outside the box from the right side that found the top left corner. Boston University added one more goal in the 72nd minute. Erin Neville struck the ball from 25 yards out from the left side to find the top right corner.
Bucknell had another look at a score in the 55th minute following a shot attempt inside the box from Talia Szatkowski that called for Parisi to make a diving effort to prevent the goal.
Loos, Szatkowski and Kendall Ham each finished with a shot attempt in the game. Jessica Ratner recorded four saves in the contest.
Bucknell returns to action on Sept. 22 when the team wraps up its non-conference schedule at Duquesne. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
