BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite a first half goal from Sarah Bresette, 110 minutes would not be enough to determine a winner as the Bucknell women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at UMBC on Sunday afternoon. The Bison now move to 1-0-1 on the season.
“Overall, the women played through a really tough overtime game early on in the season,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “We get that experience in an overtime, and I was really proud of the way we played and that the group left it all out on the field.”
Bucknell took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute of action. Megan Holtz found freshman Talia Szatkowski on the left wing, who then plotted the ball inside the box to Bresette, who was able to kick the ball through the pipes for the score. Szatkowski earned her first collegiate point off the assist.
“Great composure on the finish and great job by Talia picking her [Bresette] out in the box,” said coach Kuss.
Goalkeeper Jessica Ratner recorded three of her six saves in the first half, helping the Bison defense hold the Retrievers scoreless. Ratner's first save came in the 13th minute off a shot from Rachel Lyon. She also recorded saves in the 31st and 37th minutes.
The Bison had another scoring opportunity in the 40th minute on a strike from Cora Climo off the post, but goalkeeper Jen Nance was able to save the ball.
UMBC got on the board in the 58th minute by a goal from Gabby Boehmer. Amanda Dailey was able to cross the ball into the scramble of players and Boehmer tapped the ball in for the score.
Both teams continued to tussle for the next 32 minutes, ultimately sending the game into overtime.
Ratner recorded just one save between the two overtime periods, and it proved to be the most important one. In the 93rd minute, Amira Walcott was able to split two defenders, taking the ball inside the box and getting off a shot, but Ratner was there to prevent the goal.
UMBC outshot the Bison 17-10, but Bucknell led 6-4 in corners kicks. Alexis Gannon finished with a team-high three shots.
Bucknell returns to action on Aug. 28, when the team continues its four-game road trip in California at Loyola Marymount. Match time is set for 7 p.m Eastern.
