CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) – All three of Bucknell's boats finished in second place in the finals and the Bison took second in the team standings at the Patriot League Women's Rowing Championship Friday. Navy won the team title for the second time in three years as it captured first place in all three races.
Also contested during the Patriot League Championship was the Class of 2014 Cup between Bucknell and Boston University. Since the Bison varsity eight finished ahead of the Terriers, Bucknell retained the cup for a second year in a row.
Bucknell, which won seven consecutive Patriot League titles from 2006-12, was closest to Navy in the varsity eight race as the Mids crossed the line three-tenths of a second ahead of the Bison. Third-place Holy Cross was nearly eight seconds behind Bucknell. Earlier in the day the Bison won their heat to earn a spot in the grand final.
The Bucknell second varsity eight also earned a silver medal. The Bison finished second to Holy Cross by less than a second in the morning heat and then came back to post a 6:49.4 in the grand final to beat out Boston U., Holy Cross, Georgetown and MIT.
The varsity four was also second in both its races on Friday as it was runner-up to Boston U. in the heat and to Navy in the final. The Bison ended up beating the third-place Terriers in the final by 11 seconds.
The overall team standings featured Navy with 54 points and Bucknell in second with 48. Holy Cross and defending champion Boston U. tied for third with Georgetown taking home fifth place. Thanks to their victory, the Mids will represent the Patriot League at the NCAA Rowing Championships May 29-31 in Gold River, California.
