LEWISBURG, Pa. – Maddy Molinari scored four goals and dished out two assists and Gretchen Richter added two goals and two assists, but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early deficit and lost to Lafayette by a 14-11 margin Wednesday evening at a chilly Graham Field.
The Bison (2-12, 0-7 Patriot League) reached double figures in goals for the second straight game and the fourth time this season as five other players scored one goal apiece, including freshman Erika Stube, who netted her first career goal.
The Leopards (4-11, 2-5 PL) were led by six goals from Kirsten Wilhelmsen, four goals from Sarah Malone and six assists by Ashley Tedesco. Four of Tedesco's assists came on goals by Malone, while the other two came on Wilhelmsen scores.
Wilhelmsen set the tone early as she scored twice in the game's first 70 seconds and Lafayette led 3-0 before three minutes were gone. The Leopards extended their lead to 5-1 before Bucknell went through a scoring flurry late in the first half. Molinari, Emily Becker and Richter scored three goals in a span of 1:02 to cut the Bison deficit to just 5-4.
A Malone goal with 4:07 to play in the first half made it 6-4 and it looked like that would be the halftime score, but Bucknell turned it over on its defensive side of the field late in the stanza and Wilhelmsen scored 10 seconds before halftime.
Back-to-back goals by Molinari and Stube brought the Bison to within 8-6 with just over 20 minutes to play, but Malone, Charlotte Rath and Wilhelmsen scored three unanswered goals to extend the Lafayette lead to a game-high five goals (11-6) with 14:09 to play.
Bucknell did have a couple more rallies in it as Christina Manis and Molinari scored 11 seconds apart to make it 11-8 with 13:36 to play and later Molinari and Caroline Collins scored 11 seconds apart to make it 13-11 with 6:18 on the clock.
The Leopards, though, were able to melt more than three minutes off the clock on their final possession that ended with a Malone goal with 21 seconds left to give them their final three-goal margin.
After trailing by three goals at halftime, the Bison played Lafayette even in the second half with both teams scoring seven times.
The Leopards outshot Bucknell 23-20, but the Bison had a solid 15-11 edge in draw controls with Richter claiming a game-high six.
Bucknell goalie Elizabeth Duswalt posted three saves, while Lafayette's Anna Raymond had four.
The Bison will play non-league opponent Johns Hopkins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
