LEWISBURG, Pa. -- No. 20 Johns Hopkins broke open a defensive struggle with a 10-goal second half and defeated Bucknell 16-5 on Saturday at sunny Graham Field. Freshman Gretchen Richter led the Bison with three goals and sophomore Elizabeth Duswalt equaled her career high with 15 saves, but a 9-1 Johns Hopkins run in the second half proved to be decisive.
Duswalt kept the Bison (2-13) in the game in the first half, making 10 of her 15 saves in the opening 30 minutes. She made two nice saves in the opening moments of the game, but both times Bucknell turned the ball over on the clear. The Blue Jays (11-2), who won their ninth straight game, then opened the scoring on CeCe Finney's goal 2:24 into the match.
Johns Hopkins led 4-0 after Dene' DiMartino's goal at the 18:22 mark, but a strong defensive effort by the Bison resulted in a 16-minute scoring drought for Johns Hopkins. Bucknell finally got on the board with 2:38 left in the half when Christina Manis fed a cutting Richter for her 16th goal of the season.
Johns Hopkins responded with two goals right off draws in the next 39 seconds to go up 6-1. Another Manis-to-Richter goal, this one right before the buzzer, made it a 6-2 game at the half.
The Blue Jays pulled away early in the second. DiMartino's goal just 25 seconds inot the period launched a quick four-goal flurry. After Emily Kookogey scored on a free-position shot for the Bison, Johns Hopkins scored another five in a row, including four in a span of just 1:56, to put the game out of reach.
Richter's hat trick was her third of the season. Ally Furbay added a goal and an assist for the Bison, and Manis finished with two assists. Caroline Collins led the team with three draw controls, and Erika Stube picked up three ground balls.
Shannon Fitzgerald led Johns Hopkins' balanced scoring attack with three goals and two assists. DiMartino and Haley Schweizer also scored three goals, and DiMartino led all players with eight draw controls.
Bucknell has been strong in the draw circle this season, but Johns Hopkins won 16 of the 21 draws in this one. The Blue Jays outshot the Bison 37-18 and forced 22 turnovers, eight of them coming on clears, where Bucknell finished 13-for-21.
The Bison will be back in action on Tuesday at Columbia at 6 p.m.
