WORCESTER, Mass. – Kristen Zahn went 4-for-4 for the second time in as many days, but it wasn't enough as Bucknell softball saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss at Holy Cross on Sunday.
Despite the loss, Bucknell has clinched a spot in the four-team Patriot League Tournament on May 7-9. The tournament will be held in Bethlehem, Pennsylvana, as Lehigh clinched the regular season title and hosting rights with a 3-0 win over Army on Sunday.
The Bison dropped to 30-18 overall and 9-6 in the Patriot League with the loss to Holy Cross, coming up just one victory short of setting the program record for consecutive wins in a season. The Crusaders have won at least one game in each of their past four conference series, upping their record to 8-16 overall and 6-9 in the league.
Holy Cross broke a 2-2 tie with the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hailey Mullen led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third. She went on to score on a Bucknell error.
Bucknell had tied the game twice in the middle innings. Down 2-1 in the top of the third, the Bison evened the score when Jacee Almond scored on a single by Cydnee Sanders. Trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning, Erin Cox led off with a single and later scored on a double by Chaylen Andolino.
The Bison had 11 hits in the game, led by Zahn's four, but left 11 runners on base. They were also plagued defensively by three errors that led to two unearned runs.
Amanda Fazio had three hits for Bucknell. Sanders singled twice, while Cox and Andolino had one hit apiece.
Zahn went 9-for-10 during the series. She is 12 for her last 14 at the plate and now leads the team with a .385 batting average.
Emily Jarvis led the Crusaders, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs. She led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run, and drove in another run with a single in the third inning.
Bucknell wraps up the regular season with a home series against Boston University on May 2-3.
