ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Bucknell women's lacrosse team ran into an offensive juggernaut on Monday at Winthrop and fell 19-9 in the first of two Spring Break contests in the Carolinas. Maddy Molinari, Gretchen Richter and Sam Rickels tallied two goals apiece for the Bison, who are now 2-4 on the season.
Kristen Shriver logged six goals and an assist, and Jenna Kasmarik scored five goals, and Shannon Gallagher had two goals and four assists for the Eagles, who are now 6-1 on the season while averaging 16.1 goals per game.
Bucknell got out to a good start in its first-ever meeting with Winthrop, scoring the opening goal on an all-freshman combo with Mary Margaret Kenney feeding Richter 4:31 into the match. The Bison answered back-to-back goals by the Eagles with tallies from Rickels and Molinari to go up 3-2 at the 18:21 mark.
Winthrop jumped back in front on goals from Kasmarik and Shriver less than a minute apart, but Richter tied it at 4-all off a feed from Emily Kookogey. But the final 12 minutes of the half belonged to the Eagles. They outscored the Bison 6-1 over that span, with a goal from Danielle Ellis with just 10 seconds left giving Winthrop a 10-5 lead at the break.
The margin ballooned to 14-5 after Winthrop scored the first four goals of the second period, and it climbed to as many as 11 at 19-8 before Rickels closed the scoring for Bucknell in the final seconds.
Richter tallied five draw controls in addition to her two goals, and Kenney and Lucia Smircich each picked up four ground balls. Elizabeth Duswalt made four saves for the Bison, while Alaina Girani had six for Winthrop.
The Eagles finished with a 29-17 shot advantage and also led 24-16 in ground balls and 16-14 in draw controls.
The Bison will continue their southern trip on Wednesday at Davidson at 5 p.m. before returning to Patriot League play at Navy on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
