DAVIDSON, N.C. -- It was a tale of two halves Wednesday evening at Richardson Stadium, as Bucknell rolled to a 9-3 halftime lead, only to see Davidson storm back for a 12-11 win in non-league women's lacrosse action. Emily Kookogey scored four goals and Gretchen Richter tallied three goals and six draw controls, but the Bison dropped their third straight game and fell to 2-5 on the season.
Lucy Sexton scored four goals, Emily Cooke had two goals and two assists, and Nicole Pettiglio hit the net three times for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-2 on the season while defeating Bucknell for the first time in six all-time matchups.
Bucknell played perhaps its best half of the season in the opening half-hour, outshooting Davidson 19-9, including 4-for-5 accuracy on free-position attempts, en route to a six-goal advantage. The game was only 8:12 old when the Bison led 5-0. Maddy Molinari scored two of those goals and Eve Lukowski assisted on two.
Davidson pulled within 6-3 on back-to-back goals by Emma Sissman, but the Bison finished the half with three consecutive goals, the last coming off Kookogey's stick with just five seconds left on the clock.
Bucknell's 9-3 halftime lead might have been even larger if not for seven saves from Davidson goalie Katy Boyle. That proved big as the Wildcats completely turned the tables in the second half. They outshot Bucknell 20-6 and scored five times on 8-meter attempts.
Davidson scored the first seven goals of the half, with Cooke's unassisted tally giving the Wildcats their first lead of the night at 10-9 with 9:35 remaining.
The Bison broke their scoreless drought and tied it back up on a goal by Christina Manis off a feed from Molinari with 6:18 left. Davidon fired right back 63 seconds later on a goal by Emily Cooke. The Bison won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over. Elizabeth Duswalt made a save on Arden Simone, but Sexton picked up the loose ball and scored to make it 12-10 with 2:56 to play.
Molinari hit the post with just over two minutes to play. Bucknell forced a turnover to get the ball back in the final minute, and Richter scored with 13 seconds left to make it a 12-11 game. But Emily Rademacher collected the draw and the Wildcats were able to run out the clock.
Molinari and Manis both tallied two goals and one assist for the Bison. Duswalt made six of her eight saves in the second half. Boyle finished with nine saves for the Wildcats, who led 29-25 in shots and 14-11 in draw controls. Both teams nabbed 20 ground balls.
Bucknell's four-game road trip continues Saturday at Navy at 11:30 a.m.
