LEWISBURG, Pa. – It will be difficult to top the excitement from last weekend's record-breaking performances at Penn State, but the Bucknell track and field teams will try to do just that as they send athletes to two quality events this weekend. The Bison will be represented by athletes at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational and the Youngstown Invitational, both taking place on Friday and Saturday.
“We are very excited to be heading to two outstanding meets in the Midwest,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “Youngstown has always been a great meet for us in the past and we are taking a very large group there to compete. As far as I know, Bucknell has never been to a track and field meet at Notre Dame and this is a great meet to really promote the Bucknell brand and see a lot of teams that we normally do not see. Both tracks are oversized so the runners doing 200 meters and longer should see faster times than usual. It is a major weekend as far as determining our Patriot League lineup in two weeks and adding to our ECAC-IC4A qualifying list.”
Notre Dame expects one of its largest fields in years for the Meyo Invitational as it has accepted nearly 1,000 entries from 49 schools and numerous track clubs from across the country. The event is known for the Meyo Mile with some of the best runners in the country shooting for a sub-four time. Bucknell senior Andrew Garcia-Garrison will be one of those runners looking to accomplish the feat.
Garcia-Garrison was named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week after breaking two records last weekend at Penn State. He joined John Westwood, Kevin Tapper and Alex Jagelsky to break the school record in the distance medley relay on Friday and broke the program's record in the mile with a time of 4:02.35.
Bucknell will compete in the Youngstown State Invitational for the fourth straight year. Two current members of the women's team won titles at the event last season, as Alison Billas was the champion in the 5,000-meter run and Sophia Nnadi took the top spot in the shot put.
Freshman Efe Agege is coming off a strong performance last weekend at the 17th Annual Bison Open that landed her Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. She won the triple jump with the second-best leap in school history, and became the first ECAC qualifier in the event with a distance of 39-6 ½.
Following this weekend's competition, the Bison will return to Gerhard Fieldhouse for their fourth home event of the season. The Bucknell Tune-Up will be held on Friday, Feb. 13.
