LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's water polo team extended its unbeaten streak to start the 2015 season to three thanks to wins over George Washington and Siena Saturday during the second day of the season-opening Bison Invitational. The Bison defeated the Colonials 16-11 in the first game and followed that with a 10-7 victory over the Saints just a few hours later.
The opener against George Washington was a back-and-forth affair that featured six ties in the first 17 minutes of play. Bucknell (3-0), though, got hot and outscored the Colonials 8-2 over an approximately 14-minute stretch in the second half to break the game open. A goal by Gigi Joudrie extended the Bison lead to five goals (15-10) for the first time and the final 16-11 margin equaled that for a game-high lead.
Eleanor Marrs led the way on the offensive end against George Washington as she registered a career-high eight points on three goals and a career-high five assists. Joudrie and Hannah Sunday chipped in three goals apiece, while Shyla Lintz added two.
The 16 goals for Bucknell marked its most since scoring 17 against George Washington in the 2012 Southern Championships.
Freshman Manuela Herrera received her second straight start in goal and posted seven saves.
In the nightcap against Siena, Bucknell again used a late run to propel it to victory. The score was tied 6-6 two minutes into the final period, but the Bison scored four of the game's final five goals in a span of just 2:28 and then milked the clock over the final couple of minutes.
Eight different Bucknell players scored goals in the contest with Marrs and freshman Kendyl Johnson netting two apiece. Through just three games Marrs already has team highs in goals (9), assists (8) and points (17).
Sunday drew six ejections, although the Bison scored just one six-on-five goal in the contest.
Sophomore Haley Derrod saw her first game action of the year in cage and posted 11 saves.
The Bison Invitational will wrap up Sunday with a total of eight games in Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell will play three times: Hartwick (8 a.m.), VMI (11:45 a.m.) and St. Francis Brooklyn (4:45 p.m.).
