LEWISBURG, Pa. – On opening weekend the Bucknell women's water polo team was charged with playing six games in a span of less than 48 hours. The Bison came out of the busy stretch with a 5-1 record, including a 2-1 mark on Sunday at their own invitational in Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell opened the day with a 13-7 loss to No. 19 Hartwick, but bounced back with wins against VMI (by a 14-12 score) and St. Francis Brooklyn (by a 13-3 margin).
The weekend's contests were played as part of the 20-game Bison Invitational that began Friday with Bucknell's 15-4 win over Notre Dame College.
Hannah Sunday posted perhaps the best individual performance of the day when she netted a career-high seven goals against VMI to tie the school record that had previously been achieved by Meg Blitzer in 2004, Valentina Rozas in 2009 and current teammate Taylor Barnett in 2012. Overall, Sunday scored 12 goals and drew 12 ejections in the three games on Sunday. She has a team-high 19 goals this season and is now just four points shy of 100 in her career.
Eleanor Marrs also had a strong day offensively with three multi-goal outings. She totaled seven goals and five assists in the three games and leads the team in assists (13) and points (29) on the young season.
Bucknell's goalies again split time in cage. Freshman Manuela Herrera started against Hartwick and recorded 10 saves, while sophomore Haley Derrod drew VMI and St. Francis Brooklyn and totaled 11 stops in the two contests. Both goalies played three games during the weekend.
In the opener against Hartwick, Bucknell fell behind 2-0 and could never draw even as the Hawks led wire-to-wire. Hartwick tallied nine of the game's final 14 goals.
Just a couple hours later the Bison were in the pool again to face VMI in a game that proved to be tough despite Bucknell jumping out to a 5-2 second-quarter lead. The Keydets did draw even at 9-9, but a third-quarter Marrs penalty shot 16 seconds later gave the Bison the lead for good. Bucknell converted six 6-on-5 goals and two penalty shots in the contest.
The nightcap against St. Francis Brooklyn proved to be an easy win for the Bison, who scored 10 unanswered goals and held the Terriers scoreless for more than 26 minutes at one point. Five different Bucknell players posted a multi-goal outing, led by three scores apiece by Sunday and Marrs.
The Bison will be idle next weekend and will return to the pool for four league games at Kinney Natatorium Feb. 28 and March 1.
