LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell was strong in every aspect of the game as it rolled to an 80-51 win over Delaware in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday at Sojka Pavilion. Sophomore guard Jacquie Klotz scored 21 of her game-high 25 points in the first half, and the Bison recorded assists on their first 13 field goals while improving to 6-4 this season.
The Bison shot 48 percent from the field, including an 8-of-20 mark from beyond the arc, and converted 12 of their 14 free throws. They finished with 21 assists on 30 field goals, recorded a 47-35 advantage on the boards, and tallied 10 blocks. The Blue Hens, who dropped to 4-5 on the season, were held to just 29 percent shooting.
“We talked a lot about moving the ball around and sharing the ball, and I thought we did that today,” said Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell. “It was really fun to watch and I'm proud of the team.”
Klotz didn't get career highs in points or rebounds, but it may have been the best game of her young career. In addition to her 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, she added nine rebounds, a career-high five assists, two steals and one block. The majority of those stats came in the first half, as she played all but one possession while leading Bucknell to a 42-25 lead.
Roussell lauded the overall play of Klotz, noting her shot selection, unselfishness and her defensive effort against Delaware's Hannah Jardine, who entered the game as the team's leader in field goal percentage (49 percent) and 3-point field goal percentage (49 percent). Jardine finished with seven points, going 3-of-8 from the field and 1-of-4 from long range.
Junior forward Claire DeBoer had another solid game, posting 17 points and seven rebounds. She added two steals, giving her a team-leading 23 on the season. Ten players scored for the Bison. Junior forward Sune Swart had nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 day at the line, including a 3-pointer that she released just before the shot clock hit zero. Senior Tyler Craig finished with seven points, freshmen Kyi English and Rachel Dumiak scored five apiece, and freshman Kate Walker registered her first three points as a Bison player.
Defensively, sophomore forward Catherine Romaine was outstanding in the paint, finishing with five blocks. Swart, who joins Romaine in the top 10 in the Patriot League in the category, added three. The Bison finished just two shy of tying the program record of 12 set at Michigan State in 2012. Eleven of the blocks in that game came by one player, Hope Foster.
Courtni Green led Delaware with 11 points, while Sade Chatman was right behind her with 10. Bucknell has held its opponent under 40 percent shooting in seven of its 10 games this season and under 30 percent three times.
The Bison complete their non-conference schedule with an away game at Morgan State on Tuesday at noon. The Bears are 2-10 with losses in their past four games.
