BUFFALO, N.Y. – Poor shooting proved costly for the Bucknell women's basketball team in a 61-56 loss to Canisius on Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Bison almost overcame the shooting woes, but their fourth-quarter comeback fell short, ending their three-game winning streak.
Bucknell, which fell to 4-2 overall, shot 36 percent from the field, including a 30 percent mark from beyond the arc, and just 56 percent (10-18) from the foul line. The Bison trailed by as much as 13 in the fourth quarter, but battled back to cut the deficit to three with under two minutes to play. Down 59-56, miscommunication resulted in an errant pass and a steal for Canisius. The Golden Griffins made one of two free throws to put the game away.
“I was proud of our resiliency at the end, but we just made too many mistakes throughout the game,” said Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell. “I didn't feel like we were active in our defense today, which allowed them to play comfortable for too long, and they made us pay.”
Canisius had four players score at least nine points and made nine 3-pointers. Tishana Mills led the way with 13 points, Margaret Halfdanardottir and Maria Welch added 10 apiece, and Crystal Porter finished with nine. Halfdanardottir made three of her five 3-point attempts and is 13-20 (65 percent) on the season.
“We need to regroup and hopefully get back to being the tougher team,” Roussell said. “They were very proud of 'out-toughing' us after the game and deservedly so. That's what probably hurts the most. We pride ourselves on that, and it wasn't there for us consistently today.”
Junior Claire DeBoer did her best to spark the Bison offense, posting a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. She was 8-of-14 from the floor and made seven of her 10 free throw attempts. She led the Bison in scoring for the second straight game, averaging 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds on the week.
Bucknell scored a large portion of its points during a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Jacquie Klotz struggled to find her shot early in the game, but turned it on during the Bison's near comeback, scoring seven points in a span of 1:30. DeBoer tallied nine points during the run, including a free throw to make it a one-possession game with 1:47 left in regulation.
The Bison finished with a 40-33 advantage on the boards. Sophomore forward Catherine Romaine had a career-high eight rebounds, while Klotz finished with seven and Tyler Craig tallied five. Junior guard Megan McGurk contributed four assists.
Bucknell will look to bounce back when it hosts unbeaten Youngstown State (5-0) on Wednesday at Sojka Pavilion. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by the Bison men's game against Columbia at 7 p.m.
