LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Jacquie Klotz and junior Claire DeBoer recorded double-doubles and 11 Bucknell players scored as the Bison rolled to a 76-46 win over Binghamton in the team's home opener on Wednesday at Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell dominated the boards on its way to improving to 2-1 on the season, finishing with a 56-29 advantage in rebounds. Klotz, a 6-0 guard, fueled the effort with 16 to go along with her 19 points, DeBoer pulled down 12 to go along with 10 points. All 12 players that entered the game had at least one rebound for the Bison.
The Bison were just as dominant on the scoreboard, starting with a 15-0 run to open the game. Klotz scored nine points during that stretch, which lasted four minutes, while sophomore Catherine Romaine tallied four and senior Tyler Craig added two with a layup. Ten of the first 15 points came in the paint, setting the tone for what would occur most of the game. Bucknell finished with 40 points in the paint to just 18 for Binghamton.
“We came out and competed,” said Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell. “I think we learned some good lessons out at Notre Dame on Sunday. We talked to the players before the game saying we weren't going to give the effort we did at Notre Dame and then come out here and play nonchalant. I was really proud of the way we came out today.”
The game-opening run helped Bucknell jump out to a 27-9 lead after one quarter, its second 27-point quarter to open a game through three contests this season. The Bison upped their lead to 43-24 at the half and then outscored the Bearcats 33-22 in the second half.
Freshman Kaitlyn Slagus had a breakout game offensively for the Bison with 11 points, five of which came from a perfect night at the foul line. Romaine finished with nine points, while junior Sune Swart had seven and freshman Kyi English contributed five.
The Bison were able to mix and match lineups during the game as no player reached 30 minutes. Freshman Maegan Mikkelsen scored the first four points of her career with two buckets down low, while fellow freshman Rachel Dumiak hit from long range for the second consecutive game.
Binghamton's Imani Watkins led all players with 20 points, but it took 23 shots. The Bison held the Bearcats to 27 percent shooting. Kim Albrecht also reached double figures with 12 points, while reigning America East Rookie of the Week Rebecca Carmody finished with 11 rebounds. The Bearcats received just five points from their bench, while the Bison reserves contributed 31.
DeBoer's double-double was the 11th of her career and her second this season. Klotz recorded a double-double for the second straight game and has five for her career.
Bucknell is back on the road for its next game as it travels to play Manhattan on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Jaspers are 1-1 after a 60-49 loss to Fordham on Wednesday.
