NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Kiersten Sydnor recorded her first career hat-trick to lead the Bucknell field hockey team to a 4-1 win at Yale on Sunday. It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Bison, who improved to 8-9 overall.
After a scoreless first half, Yale (2-11) took a 1-0 lead 4:25 into the second half on a goal by Marissa Medici. It was the only score allowed by sophomore goalie Emily Finn, who made four saves in her third career start. The lead didn't last long as Bucknell senior Abby Watson tied the game 10 minutes later. The unassisted goal was her third of the season.
From there, Sydnor provided the rest of the game's offense, scoring the next three goals, including two in the final 3:01 of play. The senior tallied the game-winner with an assist from Amy Mucelli in the 56th minute. She scored for the second time in the 67th minute and a third time in the 70th minute. Emily Goodloe assisted on the second goal, while Watson registered an assist on the third score.
Sydnor leads the Patriot League with 14 goals, fueled by an impressive eight goals in the past five contests. She is tied for fifth with Kelly Kline (1976) for single-season goals and has at least two games to add to that total. Coincidentally, she is also tied with Kline (1979) for sixth in single-season points with 31.
On the career list, Sydnor is tied with Dena Ebert (1998-01) in fourth with 32 career goals, and is all alone in seventh with 71 points.
The Bison did their damage against a quality Yale goalie in Emilie Katz, who entered the game as the Ivy League leader in save percentage (.800) and saves per game (11.33). She made 10 saves on 14 shots.
Bucknell has already clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, which will be held at top-seeded Boston University on Nov. 6-7, but it can jump from third to second in the league standings with a win at American in the regular season finale on Saturday.
