WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Talia Szatkowski's first collegiate goal couldn't have come at a better time, as her tally was the decisive goal to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over American on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Stadium. Jackie Ham was also credited with the assist as the Bison improve to 7-5-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the Patriot League.
With just five seconds remaining in the first half, Szatkowski was able to get off a shot from inside the box, off a cross from Ham, to the far right post to give the Bison the lead.
“Talia's goal was a tremendous effort at the end of the half," says head coach Kelly Kuss. "The goal gave us momentum going into halftime."
American had its best opportunity of the afternoon in the final minute of the contest, but the shot from Kelly Donovan sailed high over the crossbar.
Credit the Bison back line on the afternoon, which posted its seventh shutout of the season. Ham, Lauren Dandie, Kelsey Witt and Karli Cirovski each played all 90 minutes of the contest.
“Defensively, we limited their chances and worked really hard against a scrappy American team,” says coach Kuss.
Bucknell outshot the Eagles 13-7 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks en route to picking up three points in the Patriot League standings. Kendall Ham paced the team with five shot attempts, while Jessica Ratner finished with three saves.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday, when the team welcomes Loyola to Emmitt Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
