LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 decision over Loyola on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field. Talia Szatkowski and Madison Loos each found the back of the net, while Riley Coopersmith and Cora Climo were credited with assists, to help improve the Bison to 8-5-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell entered the evening in third place, following a 2-0 Navy victory at American earlier in the afternoon. The Bison were able to jump the Midshipmen and gain back sole possession of second place. The top two seeds are rewarded with a bye in the Patriot League quarterfinal round.
The Bison got on the board in the 39th minute of action. In an effort to clear the ball by Loyola, Coopersmith was able to head the ball to Szatkowski, who was able to volley it in from the top of the six-yard box for her second goal of the season.
Bucknell extended its lead in the second half, just four minutes into the period. Alexis Gannon drew a foul while trying to split two defenders, setting up a free kick for Climo. Climo was able to cross the ball into the box, where Loos was able to finish with a diving header for her second score of the year.
The Bison back line put together another rock solid performance, keeping the sheet clean for the eighth time this season. Bucknell's eight shutouts are tied for the most in a single-season in program history.
Jessica Ratner finished with four saves in the contest, including a terrific stop in the 36th minute following a header from Nicole Wahlig.
“Today's effort was a total team effort, says head coach Kelly Kuss. “Defensively, we were solid in the back and were able to move the ball around well and offensively created some great chances.”
Bucknell outshot the Greyhounds 15-11, while Loyola had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Kendall Ham finished with a team-high five shot attempts, including four on frame. Charlotte Miller finished with four shots for Loyola.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Boston University topped Holy Cross to extend its first-place lead. Colgate defeated Army West Point 1-0, while Lehigh won a 1-0 decision over Lafayette. Boston University now has 19 points, followed by Bucknell with 14 and Navy with 13. Loyola and Colgate are tied with 10 points apiece.
The Bison return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Lehigh. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
