LEWISBURG, Pa. -- It was another busy day of tennis at the Gerhard Fieldhouse Courts, and the Bison men's tennis team turned in a strong performance on Day 2 of the Bucknell Tournament. Nick Bybel, Octavio Canibe and Timber Erskine all advanced to singles finals, and the Bison also have three doubles teams still alive in main draws.
At A Singles, Bybel cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brett Shriver of Loyola in the quarterfinals. He had a tougher test against Jui Mao of Concordia in the semis, but prevailed 10-4 in a third-set supertiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Bybel will next take on Benas Majauskas of Concordia in the A final on Sunday. Majauskas eliminated Bucknell freshman Maxwell Kane in the quarters.
It was an all-Bucknell semifinal in the B Singles bracket, where Canibe defeated freshman Ben Gerber 7-5, 6-1. Earlier in the day Canibe routed Darren Mast of Mount St. Mary's 6-0, 6-1, while Gerber beat Rafael Ferriera of Concordia 6-4, 6-3 in quarterfinal action. Next up for Canibe is a berth in the B finals against Manuel Reghi of Concordia.
Bryan Adams will also play on Sunday in the B Singles consolation final against Matt Bejian of Loyola.
At C Singles, the freshman Erskine continued his wild collegiate debut. For the second day in a row Erskine won a third-set supertiebreaker by a 14-12 score. This time he outlasted Matt Shure of Loyola 6-1, 4-6, (14-12) to advance to Sunday's final against Ofir Ginat of Concordia.
The Bison are faring just as well in doubles. In the A Doubles flight quarterfinals, Bybel and Kane beat Peter Salomon and Louis Tonon of Mount St. Mary's 8-1. Adams and freshman Daniel Wright topped Bloomsburg's Tito Machado and Nenyi Micah 8-5. At B Doubles, Canibe and Gerber blanked Olfans and Righi 8-0, and they will now face a Loyola tandem in the flight final on Sunday.
