BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A 20th-minute goalkeeper clearance that ricocheted off Derek Maier and into the back of the net proved to be the only goal of the night, as Canisius held off the Bucknell men's soccer team by a 1-0 count on Friday night at Demske Sports Complex. The Bison fell to 2-2 on the season and saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Bucknell had some good looks at goal, with Jesse Klug leading all player with three shot attempts, but Canisius keeper Andrew Coughlin made five saves to keep the Bison off the board. Klug hit the crossbar with about 10 minutes left in the first half, and Coughlin made two high-difficulty saves on Klug and another on Pat Plourde in the second half.
The Canisius goal came after an attempted pass back to goalkeeper Clarke Fox from a Bucknell defender. The light pass forced Fox to race out to play the ball, and his clearance struck Maier and defelected back into the goal. That was one of only two shots on frame for the Golden Griffins (1-2) all night, and it ended Fox's personal scoreless streak at 450:22 -- more than five full games -- dating back to last season.
"We weren't ready for their unorthodox system," said head coach Brendan Nash after the game. "In the second half we made some good adjustments, but we couldn't find the back of the net. Now we need to learn from our mistakes and move on."
The overall shot ledger was even at 11-11, and Bucknell had four corner kicks to three for Canisius.
The Bison saw their 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) in regular-season road games come to an end, and next they will face Buffalo on Sunday at 1 p.m.
