TUXEDO PARK, N.Y. -- Sophomore D.J. Magee posted a pair of 2-over-par 73s on Friday and is just four shots off the individual lead after the first 36 holes of the Columbia Invitational at The Tuxedo Club. After compiling team scores of 305 and 312, Bucknell sits in fifth place with 18 holes still to come on Saturday.
The Bison were close to a stellar opening round, as senior Peter Scialabba fired an even-par 71, Magee shot 73 and freshman Daniel Levin posted a 74. That was the best three-man score in the field, but Bucknell had to count an 87, which inflated the team score.
Magee followed with another 73, and his 146 total puts him in a tie for third place in the individual standings. Columbia's Brandon Jowers is at even-par 142 through 36 holes and has a three-stroke lead over teammate Curtis Chan, who is playing unattached. Magee and Harley Abrams of Lehigh are tied for third place, and Jared Mactas of Lafayette is one behind that duo in fifth.
Scialabba's 71 was tied for the second-best score in the opening round, just one shot behind Jowers' 1-under 70. Scialabba carded an 81 in the afternoon and is now tied for 15th place. Levin and Nick Geissler both shot 79 in the second round.
Columbia has the team lead with a 604 total (303-300). Hofstra is second at 609, followed by Lehigh (615), Monmouth (616) and Bucknell (617).
The final round will be played Saturday morning, with Bucknell's tee times beginning at 9:50 a.m.
